Found Friends

Cobblestone crunched beneath Wilf’s boots as he neared the gates to the Hillhouses. Behind him, the mass of triangular rooftops and sweeping buildings towered into the sky against the backdrop of the rocky plateau that protected them. Ahead, tall gates barred the way to the city. A pair of sheriffs stood guard, idly swinging their truncheons.

“Open the gates, boys,” Wilf said as he approached.

“Out on business?” one of the sheriffs asked.

“I gotta get away from the Hillhouses for a while. I ain’t used to it.”

The sheriff shrugged, before swinging the gate open. Wilf passed them and ventured into the city beyond. Away from the Hillhouses, cool air swept through the streets, laden with the scent of food from butchers’ shops and bakeries. People milled about on their daily duties. From somewhere to his right, the faint din of a blacksmith’s hammer reached his ears.

Wilf nodded to himself. Far from the hectic night during the celebration, the city felt peaceful, like the calm after a vicious storm.

“Suits me,” he said to himself. “Hillhouses are stifling. I don’t know how Ava managed.”

He wondered how she was doing, and if she’d found anything. He cast his gaze to the distant mountains, which marked the end of the Iceplains. “The sooner you return, the sooner we can get out of here.” He’d already decided on his plan. They’d find a nice place to settle down somewhere for a while, like a new Bunker. It would give him a chance to spend more time with Elanor while Ava and Lacey cared for their dragons.

An excited voice interrupted his musings. He turned to see Jason running down the path toward him.

“Wilf!” he called. Several other children ran in tow. “Are you going to wander again?”

“Not yet,” he replied. He eyed the other children. There were half a dozen of them, all Jason’s age. “Found friends?”

“They wanted to know about the magic,” Jason said. “Like what you taught me.”

Wilf gave him a grave look “What did I tell ya about preaching?”

Jason’s face fell. “Sorry. But they really wanted to know.”

Wilf sighed. What harm could telling a few more do? “Well, the least I can do is answer some o’ your questions.”

Jason’s eyes lit up. He elbowed one of the other boys. “See? I told you it would work.”

Wilf took a seat on a doorstep. Compared to the well-dressed city-folk around him, he knew he looked like a beggar. He dropped his voice so nobody in the street would hear him. “So you wanted to know about the magic?”

“Is it true that anyone can learn it?” one of the girls asked.

Wilf nodded at her. “I was about your age, you know, when I first discovered it. I knew I wasn’t cut out for city life. No, I wanted to wander.” He dropped his voice. “But the cities don’t give us that freedom, see? If I’m gonna tell you, you’d better promise to keep it a secret.”

“Did they make you a lumberjack?” Jason asked. “Or a hunter? Or what about a messenger?”

“Never stuck around long enough to find out what they wanted.
